Newfound Gap is 84 miles 2 hours west of Brevard.  Newfound Gap, 5,046 feet, is the highest point along U.S. Highway 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The parking lot spans between the state line of North Carolina and Tennessee. The Appalachian Trail, 2,200 mile hiking trail from Georgia to Maine crosses the Newfound Gap. If you stop to stretch you legs and enjoy the views you may see some through hikers on their way to Maine.
